SOFTBALL
- Why is GABSA transitioning to Little League Softball?
- For the past few years, GABSA has played in CSL (Chambersburg Suburban League). CSL is made up of multiple communities that bring together softball teams and play each other throughout the spring season ending with a championship game. This has involved a lot of travel and no opportunity for extended season play.
- GABSA softball registration numbers have risen in recent years! Increased participation has led GABSA to determine that returning to Little League will give our players the best opportunities to increase their skills, be competitive, and have fun!
- Becoming sanctioned with Little League offers the potential for less travel and more in-house games to be played. GABSA hopes to limit travel to only 2-3 games per season.
- This transition also affords the opportunity for All Star teams to be created and play at the tournament level, something GABSA’s baseball teams have done successfully over the past several years.
- GABSA understands that during the transitional phase there may be concerns and/or improvements to be made. However, GABSA fully believes this is the right path for our program, community, and players, and will strive to make the necessary changes moving forward to ensure the best possible experience for everyone.
- What is the difference between CSL and Little League Softball?
- CSL follows the sanctioning body of ASA rules. They also allow each age’s division representative to manage certain rules such as runs allowed per inning.
- In addition, CSL requires travel from each community to play all teams within the league and the playoff structure can vary by age division.
- With Little League, the rules are structured and are not subject to change by the league.
- Since our boundaries cover a larger area, GABSA can offer Little League Softball to a larger number of players. The goal is that the league will have enough players that travel will be limited to only 2-3 games a season.
- The Little League Softball Tournament offers the opportunity for players to be nominated to an Allstar team and compete within the tournament beyond the championship.
- What is the benefit of Little League Softball?
- With the proven structure, Little League allows organizations to offer youth softball programs to serve every child in the community. In addition to on-field fundamentals and providing a competitive environment, Little League Softball uses the sport to strengthen participants’ self-esteem and confidence.
- Little League also provides resources to ensure the softball season is a positive experience for the entire family. Visit Little League University’s website for parents https://www.littleleague.org/university/parents/
- What are the age ranges for Little League Softball?
- Tee Ball ages are 5-6
- Minor ages are 7-9 (Kid and Coach Pitch)
- Major ages are 10-12 (Kid pitch)
- Senior ages are 13-16
- Please refer to Age Chart if you have any questions on which age you player should be in!
- Do we have to live in Greencastle to be able to register for Little League Softball?
- No! Greencastle is part of District 14 which is made up of multiple communities in the South Central PA region. However, not all communities in this region are charted for Little League Softball.
- To learn more about District 14, visit their website https://clubs.bluesombrero.com/pad14ll
- To find your closest chartered league and register with them, use the league finder website http://littleleague.org/play-little-league/league-finder
- Can players still play for CSL and/or Travel ball teams in addition to GABSA Little League?
- Yes. Little League is separate from CSL and Travel ball programs, allowing for players to be dual rostered. We do recognize this will create scheduling conflicts, but will work with players to afford them practice and playing time within our league.
- Are there different rules for Little League Softball?
- There are a few minor differences in the rules under Little League. It is recommended that volunteers and parents download the free Little League Rulebook App on Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- A few highlighted rule changes:
- No metal spikes for Minors or Majors
- No full roster batting line up
- Mandatory playing requirements
REGISTRATION
- Do I need to register online or in person?
- You have the option to do either. We offer online registration months in advance to the starting season. In addition, we typically offer two in person registration days closer to the start of the season. We can always be reached by e-mail or Facebook messenger to answer any questions regarding registration!
- Is there a discount if there is more than one player being registered?
- Yes! We offer a multi-player discount for those who register one or more players in a family within GABSA.
- What does the registration fee pay for?
- It takes significant funding for GABSA to operate each year. Registration fees help to cover the cost of uniforms, playing equipment, umpires, charter fees, and field and facility maintenance.
- GABSA is a non-profit organization that is run by volunteers who live in your local community. Our organization relies heavily on multiple other types of fundraising, donations, and tournament hosting in addition to registration fees to remain operational.
EVALUATIONS AND TRYOUTS
- When and how are players assigned to a team?
- All players are asked to participate in player evaluations. The date of evaluations will be communicated via our website, e-mail, and social media pages.
- Following player evaluations, the Player Agent (a board member) will conduct a draft with the coaches from each team to assign players to a team.
- When will I hear about my child's assigned team?
- After the draft, coaches will call or email families to notify them of what team they have been assigned to.
- They will provide you information about practice times and locations. It is important to note that each coach sets the practice schedule for their team.
- I have more than one child, can they play together on the same team?
- We allow all siblings to play together when in the same age division!
- Can my child play up or down a division?
- Each player is evaluated individually. If a player is identified to benefit from playing up or down, the player agent with reach out to a parent to discuss and make a decision that is best for the player.
PLAYING EQUIPMENT AND RESTRICTIONS
- What equipment does my player need?
- Each player needs to have a helmet, glove, spikes, practice clothes, additional uniform attire (what is not included in the GABSA provided uniform) and if possible a bat.
- If a player is not able to provide these items, please reach out to your coach or the GABSA board as most team share equipment with all players!
- Are there certain types of bats or other requirements around equipment that we should be aware of?
- Little League does have requirements around allowed bats. Please visit the Little League website to verify for your player and sport.
ALL-STARS AND TOURNAMENTS
- How are the Allstar teams teams decided?
- Multiple members within the league participate in nominating players for the Allstar teams.
- These members include league officers, team managers, team coaches, and the board.
- Once the nominees are decided they are approved by the Baseball and Softball Board Committees.
- Is there a separate registration fee for the Allstar team?
- Yes, each year new uniforms are ordered and each player is required to pay a registration fee for the Allstar team.
VOLUNTEERING
- Am I required as a parent to volunteer?
- During the season each team is responsible for shifts in the concession stand. Your coach and team parent will work to coordinate coverage for these shifts.
- How can I help make this season successful?
- Be supportive! This is a change, and it is new! We expect to learn from this and continue to grow and adapt in the future. We want to hear feedback on how to improve but also ask that you stand beside us on this journey for ensure a better future for our players!
